I went to a screening of WTF, and really just went because it was a free night out away from stress. But I'd have happily paid for this movie. It was well written, the music was spot on and, for me, music makes or breaks a movie. It's also not a chick flick as I thought. I hope that people will see this movie, because I thoroughly enjoyed it. Frankly, I'm shocked at the low metascore. It deserved much better. Maybe it's one of those "sleeper" were plenty of belly laughs, but also drama and action. This movie felt real, and not just because it was based on a true story, but because of the acting, dialog, writing, and heck probably all the aspects of movie making. This isn't a farce, or silly slapstick, I guess I'd call it a dramedy. Or even a drama with a lot of funny don't think I've ever seen Tina Fey do such a great job in a dramatic role, and Martin Freeman was equally engaging. Even many of the smaller roles were done so well that you felt attached to the I wasn't expecting to like the movie, I just wanted a worn-out-mom's-night-out. The humor is much more subtle than we're used from her, but it's still typical Fey. The movie takes its setting very seriously, though. The story is based on real events and does not shy away from showing the ugly sides of a war. But, very much like life itself, tragedy and comedy are sometimes closer than you'd expect. The cast has a few really big names to offer and the ending is just perfect. Overall a very satisfying experience. Frankly, the woman she portrays has numerous unenviable characteristics, like insensitivity towards the well-being of others, and a pursuit of career while ignoring the world around her. I'm sure this American journalist who spent four years in Iraq had many memorable experiences, but not every biography Is worth cinematic treatment. Her writing and producing is usually above average and she was always one of my favorites on network TV. The problem with Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, aside from the name being completely lost on me outside of the WTF acronym, is I couldn't tell if I was watching a drama infused with some comedy or a comedy infused with some drama. There's nothing worse than watching a movie for two hours and not knowing whether it's appropriate to laugh or not. I enjoy watching movies about informative periods in my time I'm not always the most up-to-date on, like the war in Afghanistan. It truly was overshadowed by Iraq during the mid 2000's, and while most people understand it as the hotbed for the Taliban and Osama, it appeared there was more to it behind the scenes of the media. Insert Kim Barker Tina Fey and her small band of press colleagues. We are rushed through much of their character background, so there's never really a true moment to feel for or bond with any character over the two hours. The events that play out even without having prior knowledge are predictable and sort of uninspiring. Fey and her co-stars do just enough on their unfocused script to keep you slightly entertained off their charisma, but despite being a fan of all the players involved Freeman & Robbie to boot, there's just not enough focus here to give WTF more than a glance.
